Closer Look at Jesus through the Book of Acts: Part 1

We know it’s vital to study God’s Word, but sometimes it’s difficult to know where to begin. Join us as we learn together how to engage both our minds and our hearts, looking for Jesus in the pages of Acts. This book builds on Luke’s Gospel, detailing the exciting account of the early church, empowered by the Holy Spirit to share Christ with the world. We’ll see that the same power that transformed the lives of early believers is still working to transform our lives — daring us to continue the story as we live for Jesus.

This women’s small group option offers bible study, accountability, community connection and prayer at a weekly lunch at Saladworks. Individually, women complete weekly homework and watch the corresponding teaching video that we review and discuss in our group over lunch. Please note that the public setting creates limitations of confidentiality, but it also offers an opportunity for community visibility of women studying God’s word. There are 5 days of homework (15 minutes each day).

The study includes live teaching, daily homework and group discussion plus great opportunities to fellowship with other Christian women. Questions focus on the daily reading and application questions for your own life. It is appropriate for all levels of Bible knowledge.

Starting Point

What is Christianity really? Can I really trust that the Bible is reliable? Is there such a thing as true faith in modern society? How can I learn anything from the Bible, it’s so confusing to me? Do you have questions? Do you want to know God but don’t know where to start?  Starting point is for those who are curious about God, have a new relationship with Jesus Christ, or are returning to church after being away for a while. It is a small group discussion around the story of God and how our story fits into it.

This study features a DVD, small group discussion and light homework.

The Gospel of Mark:  A Discovery Bible Group

Join us as we explore the gospel of Mark. One scholar calls this the “shortest and sharpest” of the Gospel stories. Join us as we explore the words and actions of Jesus and the life-altering implications of His message.

We will use the Discover Bible Group method for studying the gospel of Mark. Each week we will read the text together, spend 10 minutes answering 4 questions on our own and then discuss them as a group.  What do I learn about God in this text?  What do I learn about myself and the human condition?  What can I obey in this text?  What is a core truth I can share with someone else? We end each session using the P.R.A.Y. method of prayer.  There is minimal homework outside of the group.

Practicing the Way:  The Practices

Be with Jesus. Become like him. Do as he did. That is our calling as followers of Jesus. By adopting not just the teaching but the practices from Jesus’s own life, we open up our entire being to God and allow him to transform us into people of love. In this group we will explore two core practices of Jesus, beginning with four sessions on Solitude. In an increasingly distracted and noisy world, we need solitude more than ever to follow Jesus’ rhythm of retreat and return: retreat and be with God, in order to return to community in love and service. The second 4-session practice will be decided by the group (Scripture, Community, Service, or Witness).

Each session includes video teaching, time for reflection, guided discussion, and exercises to integrate the practice into our daily life. We will discover simple, practical suggestions to begin a lifelong journey living out these practices. For those who want to go deeper, there is an optional book for each course; for Solitude it is: “Invitation to Solitude and Silence: Experiencing God’s Transforming Presence” by Ruth Haley Barton. We will seek to deepen our relationships and community by incorporating a service project or community meal each month.

Women of the Old Testament: Ordinary Faith that Changed History 

They were ordinary people. Most would not make headlines in any other history book but God’s. Yet the women of the Old Testament made critical choices that led to extraordinary outcomes. Through their faith and strong character, they rescued their families, led people out of bondage, gave birth to kings, and even saved a nation. Through studying the lives of Old Testament women like Eve, Hagar, Miriam, Ruth, Hannah, the Shunammite woman, and more, you will see how your own everyday choices and actions can also have far-reaching impact. Let their choices challenge you, apply the lessons they learned to your own life, and let their faith and praise inspire your own.

For this study there will be scripture readings and study questions that will take about 1 hour each week to complete. On Thursday evenings we will discuss the study questions. There will also be opportunities to participate in a service project, a social event and a group dinner.
