Respite

We know that having a child with special needs is challenging for both parents and siblings. Respite is an opportunity for families affected by disabilities to break from their regular routine and have a few hours to rest. We provide an opportunity for families to drop off their kids for a fun time at church to hang out with trained volunteers! This time is full of crafts, games, sensory activities, pizza and more! Respite usually occurs on the second Saturday of the month from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.

At Willowdale, we recognize the essential and invaluable contribution of ALL people to the life of the church and invite you to join us in serving families in our church and community during our upcoming Respites! If you have questions, would like to participate, or have volunteered previously, please contact Alison Kelisek. If you are a first time volunteer with Respite, please complete the form below.

Check out Carole Hoy’s testimonial below to learn why her family serves together:

“Sebastian and I began serving at Respite night about a year ago, because there was a great need. We also knew it would be an opportunity for us to serve together, which we often don’t do. We typically work with the 14 and over group, which we’ve really enjoyed. Since we are frequent volunteers, we’ve gotten to know the regulars and look forward to seeing them. Grace, who sometimes brings her dog Jellybean and loves to cook. Rodney, whose athletic skills amaze us. Caroline who makes us laugh over pizza dinner. Brian, who isn’t very verbal but boy does he love to sing! It’s exciting when they begin to know us and come in with a hug or a huge smile. We go home exhausted after spending an evening with these kids and with the realization that this is their parents’ lives. We feel great knowing we’ve given parents the opportunity for a break, a night out to refresh and rejuvenate. That makes it all worth it!”
